REGIONAL CONFERENCE "ACCESS TO THE VICTIM OF VICTIMS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE AND GENDER BASIN"

A delegation of the Ombudsman's Office of the Republic of Macedonia led by Deputy Ombudsman Suzana Saliu participated in the two-day regional conference on the topic "Access to justice for victims of domestic violence and gender base" held in Pristina, under the motto "You you are not alone,,.

The conference was organized by the National Coordinator - the Ministry of Justice, in partnership with several domestic and international institutions, including UN Women and the US Embassy in the Republic of Kosovo.
Topics at the conference were domestic violence as a crime and human rights violation, the obligations arising from the Istanbul Convention, the penal policies, ie the intensification of these policies towards the perpetrators of these acts, the struggle with prejudices and the influence of tradition in respecting the position of women in family and society, increasing professional capacities and improving access to justice for victims, increasing trust in institutions, educating young people as a guarantee for the future without domestic violence, the role of the National Coordinator in promoting comprehensive policies and building a unified database as well as many other topics that aim to prevent and combat violence against women and in general domestic violence.

The Deputy Ombudsman, Ms. Suzana Saliu, among other things, stressed that the Republic of Macedonia made a bold and big step by ratifying the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention and Combating Domestic Violence in December 2017, known such as the Istanbul Convention. The alignment of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Macedonia with the Convention will contribute to a more serious approach of the judiciary to crimes committed by domestic violence.

"Young people should be educated in that domestic violence is forbidden and that it is a crime for which the perpetrator is punished with imprisonment," said Ms. Susanna Saliu. Macedonia has a solid normative base that guarantees the building of a just society without family violence, "Ms. Saliu said.
