REPRESENTATIVE OF THE OMBUDSMAN PARTICIPATED IN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE TOPIC "TOLERANT AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETIES OF THE WESTERN BALKANS" 14 November 2018

14-15.11.2018, Podgorica, Republic of Montenegro

REPRESENTATIVE OF THE OMBUDSMAN PARTICIPATED IN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE TOPIC "TOLERANT AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETIES OF THE WESTERN BALKANS"

In Podgorica, the Republic of Montenegro was held a Regional Conference on "Tolerant and Inclusive Societies in the Western Balkans", attended by representatives of Ministries / Institutions responsible for human rights and national minorities; National Human Rights Institutions, Equality Bodies, Members of Parliament who are members of parliamentary bodies working on the promotion and protection of human rights / anti-discrimination; civil society organizations working in the field of anti-discrimination / protection and promotion of national minorities; officials from the European Union / Council of Europe and international experts.

The Ombudsman of the Republic of Macedonia, through his representative working in the field of protection against discrimination and adequate and equitable representation, takes an active part in this conference with discussions in the working groups.

The purpose of the Conference was to set the framework for planning for future anti-discrimination and minority protection programs, based on the recommendations of the Council of Europe monitoring bodies, such as the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (FCNM) and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML).

The Regional Conference gave the opportunity to highlight some key recommendations of these bodies that are common to all users of the Western Balkans, including insufficient capacity and coordination among relevant national institutions; the insufficient participation of minorities (and their organizations) in public life and decision-making; the need to further strengthen the implementation of the legislative framework; and further raising awareness of national minorities, their rights, culture, traditions and heritage of the minorities themselves and the majority.

Also, the Conference was given the opportunity to further promote and discuss the findings of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI).
