FRENCH OMBUDSMAN MR. JEAN-PAUL DELEVOYE VISITED MACEDONIAN OMBUDSMAN OFFICE

French Ombudsman Mr. Jean-Paul Delevoye on 25-26 June had a two-day working visit of the Macedonian Ombudsman Office. In the frame of his visit the French Ombudsman met the President of the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Branko Crvenkovski and the President of Macedonian Parliament Mr. Trajko Veljanovski. Also the Ombudsmen of Macedonia and France participated on the panel discussion organized by the European Union Special Representative, Chief of the European Commission Delegation in Macedonia Mr. Ervan Fouere regarding the Day against the Torture.

“There is need for improvement of cooperation between those two institutions and for strengthening of their mutual communication with aim of easier identification of weaknesses” - said Macedonian Ombudsman Mr. Memeti.

According to the French Ombudsman Mr. Delevoye development of mutual projects will help in solving of challenges.
“I changed opinions with my Macedonian colleague regarding situations with human freedoms and rights. Such meetings should lead to closer cooperation with Macedonian institutions.”- said Mr. Delevoye.

Both Ombudsmen had speeches on the panel discussion regarding protection of victims of torture.

“As a result of recorded cases of torture in the Republic of Macedonia arises the need for strengthening of mechanisms for human rights protection, monitoring and prevention.”- stressed Mr. Memeti in his speech.
According to the Ombudsman of France transparency is the most efficient weapon against torture.

“Deprivation of liberty is not deprivation from other rights. Our institution visits penitentiaries once a week and by that enables right of the persons deprived of their liberty to contact layers.”-said Mr. Delevoye.
