AN APPEAL OF THE OMBUDSMAN REGARDING THE CLASHES IN THE PARLIAMENT

The Ombudsman, once again strongly condemns yesterday’s events and the attack of the Parliament, MPs and the violence against journalists. At the same time, the Ombudsman criticizes the unprofessional and selective treatment by the Ministry of Interior, which instead of preventing it, allowed the violence to break out.

This Ministry of Interior applies double standards in its operation, confirming the findings of the Ombudsman about the politicization of this institution, which the Ombudsman strongly condemns. The Ombudsman criticizes the actions of the police officers given that yesterday’s videos show they were present on site but did not react to prevent violence. Instead, they allowed violence to break out which lead to reporters being unable to do their job and thus violating the press freedom.

The Ombudsman’s stance is that violence cannot solve any disputes or disagreements, especially not the ones in the Parliament. The failures of this institution which in this case endangered the lives of those present in the Parliament at the time of the clashes are unacceptable, considering that it’s mandated to ensure internal security.
Ombudsman calls on the Ministry of Interior to rise above party interests and carry out its function in professional manner and in the best interest of citizens.

Ombudsman calls for rationality and urges all stakeholders, especially the political party leaders to condemn the clashes in clear and unambiguous languages and distance themselves from violence and arbitrariness, making way for peaceful election of the Parliament which would be in the best interest of the citizens.
