THE OMBUDSMAN MR. IXHET MEMETI HAD A MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION 15 November 2017

15.11.2017, Skopje

THE OMBUDSMAN MR. IXHET MEMETI HAD A MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

The Ombudsman Mr. Ixhet Memeti had a meeting with representatives of the European Commission where he discussed about the operation of the institution and the current challenges it is facing, especially after the amendments to the Law on the Ombudsman have been passed. At the same time, they discussed the situation on the human rights in the country as well as the implementation of the Ombudsman’s recommendations by the state administrative bodies.

The Ombudsman Mr. Memeti gave an overview of the development of the institution and in that regard noted the jubilee celebration which is going to take place in 2018, to mark 20 years of existence of the Ombudsman in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as the preparation of the Monograph on this occasion.

The meeting also covered the reforms in the judiciary and the Ombudsman's role in the process thereto, the systemic problems that arise in the functional independence of the Institution, as well as the new role of the Ombudsman as an observer in the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights.

The representatives of the European Commission once again affirmed their support for the Ombudsman, pointing out the unimpeded exercise of its overall mandate of utmost importance, since an independent and fully operational human rights institution is particularly important segment in the country’s progress on the road towards the European Union.
